How to Open the Mazda Key Fob

If you’re used to using the Mazda key fob more often than not, you’ll miss the convenience of the remote start and keyless entry features when the battery dies. In this case, you’ll benefit from knowing how to open the Mazda key fob and replace a dead battery yourself. If you decide to do it at home near Vista, follow our guide, but first make sure you have everything you need including:

  1. A replacement battery (CR2025)
  2. Your Mazda key fob
  3. A small flat head screwdriver with the head wrapped in tape to prevent scratches


Opening Your Mazda Key Fob

Whether you are opening a Mazda6 key fob or a Mazda CX-5 key fob, the process is similar for all recent model years. In order to open the Mazda key fob, follow these steps to reveal the battery:

  1. Press the auxiliary key button on the back of the key fob in order to remove the metal auxiliary key.
  2. Once the metal key is removed, you’ll notice a slot on either side of the key fob case.
  3. Use the tape-wrapped flathead screwdriver to gently pry open the case, one side at a time.
  4. This should remove the case. Place the latter in a place where you won’t lose track of it.

Replacing Your Mazda Key Battery

Once the key fob is open, reveal the Mazda key battery by removing the battery cab and setting it next to the key fob case. Here’s what you need to do next:

  1. You should see the Mazda key fob battery. Remove it, being mindful of the small rubber ring it sits on.
  2. If the ring is scratched or damaged, it’s important to replace the component.
  3. With the ring in place, take the new battery and set it in place with the positive (+) side facing up.
  4. Place the battery cover back in place and reattach both sides of the key fob case. Press until you hear them click into place.
