It has happened to all of us at one point or another as we drive around San Marcos: The check engine light illuminates. If you have already brought your vehicle to Mazda of Escondido for auto service but the warning light remains on, then you’ll want to know how to reset it. Learn how to reset a check engine light with our service techs in Escondido

3 Ways to Reset a Check Engine Light

There are three common ways to reset a check engine light that we recommend to drivers in the Vista area. Find out if these tips will help you to remove the check engine light from your dashboard.

Get an Engine Inspection.

Chances are, if the check engine light appears, then there is something wrong with your engine. Ultimately, it is your decision whether you wish to address the issue, but we recommend scheduling service as soon as possible to get an engine inspection. This is the best move not only for your safety, but also for your wallet, as you may be able to avoid much more costly repairs down the road.

Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

If you are confident that there is no engine service required, then you will need to manually reset the check engine light. The process is quite simple if you follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the ignition, and pop the hood. Put on safety glasses and gloves.
  2. Locate the negative battery terminal and loosen the nut with a wrench.
  3. Pull the negative connector from the battery, and keep it to the side for 30 to 60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the negative battery cable, tightening the nut with your wrench.

Check Your Gas Cap

Sometimes, your check engine light remains illuminated simply because you have a loose or cracked gas cap, which causes fumes to release. When you are safely parked, check your gas cap and tighten it as necessary. If the check engine light doesn’t turn off immediately, follow the above steps to disconnect the battery, and you should be set!
