3 Ways to Reset a Check Engine Light

Get an Engine Inspection.

Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

If you are confident that there is no engine service required, then you will need to manually reset the check engine light. The process is quite simple if you follow these steps:

1. Turn off the ignition, and pop the hood. Put on safety glasses and gloves.
2. Locate the negative battery terminal and loosen the nut with a wrench.
3. Pull the negative connector from the battery, and keep it to the side for 30 to 60 seconds.
4. Reconnect the negative battery cable, tightening the nut with your wrench.

Check Your Gas Cap

Sometimes, your check engine light remains illuminated simply because you have a loose or cracked gas cap, which causes fumes to release. When you are safely parked, check your gas cap and tighten it as necessary. If the check engine light doesn’t turn off immediately, follow the above steps to disconnect the battery, and you should be set!
